„ […] As a long time member of the German Parliament (Bundestag), Vice Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee and Chairman of the US-German Study Group of the Bundestag I am very pleased by the perspectives of this partnership, which definitely contributes to a grass-route-kind of mutual understanding and cooperation. Politics has to do, what it possible can, to promote such activities. For me it’s an honour to salute all of you, on both side of the Atlantic, hoping there will always be dedicated people, willing build bridges over some times troubled waters.[…]”
“I am pleased to welcome you on behalf of the German Government on your first visit to Germany in framework of your partnership with the Junior Fire Department of Hamburg-Stellingen. […] And as such I very much appreciate your coming to Germany, not only as partners, but also as friends. Your visit coincides with the opening of the new U.S. Embassy in Berlin just a few weeks ago on the Fourth of July with the anniversary of the start of the Berlin Airlift 60 years ago. These two historic events are but a few which mark the strong ties among our countries. Indeed there are millions of partnerships and friendships between the people of our two countries, just as the one you made with the members of the Junior Fire Department of Hamburg-Stellingen.”

The intention of promoting this kind of international exchange programs is to provide opportunities to exchange knowledge and understanding regarding the differences of life of the young people and the work of the respective fire departments.
